Loos, Ocampo Named Roscoe Eades Award Winners

          The Roscoe Eades Award, given in honor of the late Roscoe Eades for his 40 years of service to Sterling High School, has been awarded since 1960 for boys and 1975 for girls.  It is presented to the senior athletes who, in the estimation of the high school coaching staff, have contributed the most to the Sterling High School Athletic Program in the previous athletic year.  SHS is proud to announce Kaitlin Loos and Raciel Ocampo as the recipients of the 2008-09 Roscoe Eades Awards.

Roscoe Eades Female Athlete of the Year:  Kaitlin Loos

    • Kaitlin Loos is the daughter Sheri and Breck Loos. Kaitlin won nine varsity letters in her four years at SHS, four in Track and Field, three in Volleyball, and two in Girls’ Basketball.
    • Kaitlin  was a member of four NCIC Girls’ Track and Field Championships,  was a part of the girls’ volleyball team as setting the record for most wins in school history her senior year.
    •  Kaitlin was unanimous choice for NCIC 1st team all conference in Volleyball (07, 08) and Honorable Mention (06). Kaitlin was also unanimous choice for NCIC Girls’ Basketball All Conference (09) and 2nd team (08).
    • Kaitlin excelled in the classroom as well being named NCIC All Academic (08, 09) in all three sports that she was a participant.
    • In volleyball and basketball, Kaitlin received many accolades for her hard work and determination: Sauk Valley Athlete of the Week (08), Volleyball MVP(07, 08), Captain of the Volleyball team (07, 08), Kill Award (08), Serving Award (07), Most Improved (07). Was honorable mention All-State Champaign News Gazette(08), Sauk Valley News Gazette 2nd Team (07) and 1st Team (08).
    • In Basketball, Kaitlin was Sauk Valley Athlete of the Week, Sauk Valley News 2nd Team (08-09). Kaitlin was voted MVP (07-08, 08-09), Captain (08-09), Rebound Award (08-09), Offensive Player of the Year (08-09).
    • In Track and Field, Kaitlin holds the school record for 100M High Hurdles (08), Team MVP (09), State Medalist-High Jump 9th Place (09), State Qualifier 100 HH (08, 09), Most Improved (06).
    • Kaitlin was involved in many other activities outside of the athletic arenas. At Sterling High School she was a member of the National Honor Society -secretary, Science Club – Lieutenant, Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, WYSE, Hall Monitor, Service Learning, Dale Carnegie Graduate, Junior Rotarian, Rotary Scholar all four years of high school, High Honor Roll all four years, GPA 4.0+, Ranks 6th in her class which is the top 5% of the Class, Illinois State Scholar, October Student of the Month and was an S Award Winner.  
    • Kaitlin had community involvement and projects outside of Sterling High School. She was involved with the Church Annual Chili Supper, Volley for a Cure Fundraiser, Dillon Foundation Brick Project, Sauk Valley Summer fest-T shirt design, Gus Macker and Sauk Valley Summer fest volunteer.
    • In the fall, Kaitlin will be attending Olivet Nazarene and will be participating in volleyball and track
    Roscoe Eades Male Athlete of the Year: Raciel Ocampo
    • Raciel Ocampo is the son of Gabe and Marisa Ocampo. Raciel is a member of the SHS Boys Soccer and Football Teams. He earned a total of 8 varsity letters (4 in Soccer and Football)
    • Raciel was a member of the first Boys Soccer NCIC Conference Championship in 2008 and Football Conference Championships in 2005 and 2008.
    • Raciel was named NCIC All Academic (07-08, 08-09) and named All-State Academic in Football (08).
    • Raciel’s had great football success over the course of his four years. Raciel was named NCIC All Conference all four years (1st Team 07, 08, 2nd Team 05, 06); Sauk Valley All Area Team (06, 07, 08), Quad City Times (07, 08). His kicking prowess at SHS was nothing short of record breaking. His career field goal mark is 15-27. He holds five schools records: Most Career Field Goals (15), Most Field Goals in a Season (7), Most PAT’s in a Career (132/144+ 92%), Most PAT’s in a Season (44), Longest Field Goal (49 yds.). Raciel Ranks 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in Most PAT”s in a Season. His 132 PAT’s is 11th All Time in the history of IHSA.
    • Raciel helped Sterling Boys Soccer become a respectable program. He has been named NCIC All-Conference 3 Times (1st Team 07, 08, 2nd Team 06). He and his teammates won the schools first IHSA Playoff Game in 2007 over Rockford Auburn. In 2008, Sterling had its first winning season with a record of 21-3, and won the first NCIC Championship. While holding every school record for goals scored in season and career, Raciel’s most notable records are now on the state level. IHSA #4 with 60 Goals in a Season, IHSA #23 with 6 Goals in a Game.
    • Raciel was involved in many activities outside of athletics. He was involved in Math Club, Science Club, Blind, ASSETS, Hall Monitor, Student Council, Youth Soccer Programs, Service Learning, Church Youth Group, and began “The Ropes” a program to help socially develop middle schools students in their preparation for high school and work.
    • Raciel is the epitome of the Student-Athlete and graduated in the top 12% of his class.
    • Raciel will attempt to walk on the Men’s Soccer Team at Bradley University in the Fall and will major in Civil Engineering.
    Finalists in the male Roscoe Eades voting process were Joseph Bertrand and Niko Rivera.  Girls’ finalists were Ann Wolber and Niki Rivera.
