Football Goes to 2-0 The Sterling Football team rolled up 514 yards of total offense in a 47-14 dismantling of Peoria Notre Dame on September 2 in a game played at Richwoods Stadium in Peoria. Sterling scored on just its second play from scrimmage – a 73 yard pass from senior QB Sean Bright to senior RB Brandon Rodriquez. Rodriquez caught the pass just 15 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, but then outraced the Notre Dame defense up the left sideline and into the end zone. Notre Dame would tie the score at 7 a few minutes later as result of a penalty aided touchdown drive. It was all Sterling after that as the Golden Warrior reeled off 40 unanswered points to go up 47-7 and start the mercy rule running clock with just less than 10-minutes to play in the 4 th quarter. Rodriquez would add a pair of rushing touchdowns to his TD grab during that 40-point onslaught. Senior RBs Christian Temiquel and Graham Hall ran roughshod over the Notre Dame defense all night long – Temiquel amassing 153 yards on just 6 carries while scoring a pair of TDs. Hall added another 136 yards on 11 carries and a TD. The Sterling defense was dominant as well, recording 5 sacks and harassing Notre Dame QB Nick Honings into a 1-15 passing effort. Close to half of Notre Dame’s 170 total yards were against Sterling’s second and third string defense late in the game. Sterling takes a 2-0 record and #5 class 5A state ranking into its September 9 home opener against Blue Island (Eisenhower)
