Boys Basketball:  Warriors Go 1-3 at DeKalb Tournament

The SHS Boys Basketball team went 1-3 at the 84th Annual Chuck Dayton DeKalb Holiday Tournament.  Sterling went 1-2 in pool play with a win over Sycamore, and losses to Machesney Park-Harlem and Aurora-Marmion.  The Golden Warriors then concluded play with a consolation loss to Hampshire loss.

Harlem 55, Sterling 43 – December 22

Sterling committed 23 first half turnovers, fell behind 31-19 at halftime, and could not recover.  Chris Fritsch paced Sterling with a double-double 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

Sterling 61, Sycamore 41 – December 23

Sterling led just 32-28 midway through the third quarter, but used an 8-0 run to take a 40-28 lead.  Sterling led 47-37 after three, and scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to take control.

Patrick Petrosky (13), Alejandro Rivera (13) and Fritsch (12) were Sterling’s leading scorers.  Both Rivera and Fritsch grabbed 10 rebounds.

Marmion 59, Sterling 52 - December 26
Boxscore

Baskets from Rivera and Cornell Hartz gave Sterling a 33-29 third quarter lead, but Marmion responded with a 10-0 run to go ahead 39-33.  Sterling could not get any closer than four points the rest of the game.

Petrosky led Sterling in scoring with 15 points.  Fritch recorded his third straight double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Hampshire 66, Sterling 65 - December 28

Sterling led by as many as seven in the first half (29-22), but trailed 34-33 at the break.  The Warriors took a five-point advantage (41-36) in the third quarter, but once again Hampshire battled back, and it was back and forth for the rest of the game.

Trailing 64-58 late, Sterling went on a 7-0 run to take a 65-64 lead.  Petrosky started the run with a three and ended it with a two-pointer off an assist from Jose Knox.

Hampshire scored what proved to be the game-wining basket after grabbing an offensive rebound off a missed three-point attempt.

Sterling committed two turnovers following the go ahead basketball, the second coming on a questionable offensive foul call against Knox.

Petrosky led Sterling in scoring for the third straight game with 19.  Knox scored 16 and dished out seven assists.  Rivera was also in double figures with 10 points.

Next Up:  Sterling (8-6, 3-0) is off until Friday, January 6 when the Golden Warriors play a big NIB-12 West game at Streator.  The Warriors next home game is the following night against Moline (14-1), who won the DeKalb tournament championship with a 50-48 win over Marmion.
