Boys Basketball: Warriors Down Comets to Open Season

Senior Jose Knox scored 21 points and dished out eight assists in leading the SHS Boys Basketball team to a 72-64 win over Newman in the first round of the Sauk Valley Thanksgiving Classic Monday at Newman High School.

Knox scored 16 of his 21 points and hit all five of his three point baskets in the first half for the Warriors, who led 39-31 at halftime. Sterling’s lead would grow as large as 17 in the second half. Newman could get no closer than nine at any point of the second half.

Sterling shot 66% from the field, which offset 29 Golden Warrior turnovers.

Alejandro Rivera (12), Chris Fritch (12) and Patrick Petrosky (10) joined Knox in double-figure scoring for the Warriors.

Sterling also won the sophomore contest 46-23.

Next Up: Sterling hosts Morrison in the second round of the tournament Tuesday at Musgrove Fieldhouse with the sophomore contest tipping off at 6:00 p.m.
