Football: Warriors Fall to Montini, End Season 9-2 The game plan for the SHS Football team against Lombard-Montini in the second round of the IHSA 5A playoffs Saturday was to control the clock and keep the Broncos high-powered offense off the field. Sterling did manage to control the clock, but could not turn long drives into enough points to spring the upset as Montini claimed a 35-10 win at Roscoe Eades Stadium. Sterling controlled the clock for 17 of the 24 minutes in the first half, and trailed just 7-3 following a 31-yard field goal from Salomon Ocampo with 1:28 to play before halftime. Montini responded with quick touchdown before halftime, and then took the opening kickoff of the second half and scored again to put the Warriors in a 21-3 hole. Sterling came right back and scored its only touchdown on a 4th down 19 yard pass from Dylan Stingley to Alan Lewis with 4:43 to go in the third. Sterling’s defense then forced Montini to a three-and-out possession and its only punt of the game, but the Warrior offense could not get a drive going and was also forced to punt. Montini scored on its next two possessions to put the game away. Sterling ends a fine season with a final record of 9-2. The season included a nine game winning streak, the first time that has happened for the Warriors since 2005. The squad also established a new school record for consecutive conference championships with four. Congratulations men! |
