Football:  Warriors Survive 1st Round Scare

Boxscore

The SHS Football team is in the second round of the IHSA class-5A playoffs for the fourth straight year, but the Golden Warriors first round win over Chicago-Julian certainly did not come easy.   Marcus Robinson scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give the Warriors an 18-14 lead, then Sterling’s defense made a couple of timely stops over the final 10 minutes to preserve the four point win.

Julian senior quarterback Dae’Shawn Hurley almost single-handedly willed the Jaguars to the upset win.  He was a handful for the Golden Warrior defense all afternoon long, rushing for 154 yards, and passing for 198 more.  He rushed for one of his teams’ touchdowns and passed for the other.

His rushing score put Julian ahead 8-3 early in the third quarter.  Sterling answered right back with a 10 play, 74 yard scoring drive capped off by a 25 yard TD run from Treyvon Solis (team high 105 yards rushing).  Alejandro Rivera’s two-point  conversion run gave the Warriors the lead back at 11-8.

Hurley then marched his team right back down the field for another touchdown, this time a five yard pass to Demarlon Morris and a 14-11 Julian lead, as Hurley was stopped on the two-point conversion attempt.

Trailing for the second time in the second half, the Warriors responded with another scoring drive.  This one covered  56 yards in eight plays, with Robinson taking the ball the final two yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

Sterling’s defense bent on Julian’s next two possession, but did not break and the Golden Warriors celebrated an 18-14 win.

Next Up:  The Golden Warriors (9-1) welcome two-time  defending 5A state champion Lombard-Montini (8-2) to Roscoe Eades Stadium for a second round matchup Saturday (11/5) with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
