Football: Record Setting Night in Dixon The SHS Football team established a new school record for team rushing yards in a game during Friday night’s 49-6 win at Dixon and also laid claim to another conference championship. Sterling running backs carried the ball 43 times for 511 yards, eclipsing the previous record of 479 set against Ottawa in 1972. Three Golden Warriors rushed for over 100 yards individually – a first for the Golden Warrior football program. Treyvon Solis led the trio with 150 yards, followed by Marcus Robinson (142) and Alejandro Rivera (124). Sterling jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the second quarter on TD runs from Solis (56 yards) and Rivera (47 yards), and a 43 yard interception return for a touchdown from Dylan Pierceson. Following Dixon’s lone score, Robinson scored from five yards out to make it 27-6 at halftime. Sterling scored touchdowns on two of its first four plays of the second half – a 74 yarder from Robinson and a 35 yarder from Rivera. Sophomore Drake Penaflor-Heier rounded the scoring with a 20-yard run the fourth quarter. Sterling (7-1, 4-0) has now beaten Dixon (1-7, 0-4) 10 straight times. The win also guarantees Sterling of no worse than a tie for the NIB-12 West championship – the Golden Warriors fourth straight conference title, establishing a new school record for consecutive conference championships. Sterling also won on the sophomore level 56-12 to improve to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in conference. Next Up: The Golden Warriors try to wrap up the undisputed conference championship with a win over Ottawa Friday (10/21) at Roscoe Eades Stadium. Ottawa (4-4, 3-1) is tied with Geneseo for second in the conference standings. |
