Football: Warriors Win Conference Opener The SHS Football opened NIB-12 West conference play with a 31-14 win over LaSalle-Peru Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium. Sterling (2-1, 1-0) fell down 7-0 in the first quarter, but then reeled off 31 unanswered points to take control of the game. Sterling’s first score came on a Treyvon Solis 65 yard TD scamper on the first play following LP’s touchdown. Solis (game high 109 yards rushing) would add a second touchdown run, from eight yards out in the second quarter. Sterling quarterback Dylan Stingley threw his first two varsity touchdown passes – a 28 yarder to Ajejandro Rivera in the first quarter, and a 24 yarder to Dylan Pierceson in the third. Stingley completed eight of 11 passes in the game for 119 yards. It’s the most yards passing in a game for a Sterling quarterback since Niko Rivera threw for 148 yards in a playoff loss at Morris to end the 2008 season. After the early LP (1-2, 0-1) touchdown, Sterling’s defense was dominant, limiting the Cavaliers to just 141 yards of total offense and only six yards rushing. LP had just 30 yards of total offense at halftime. The Warriors sacked Cavalier quarterback Zach Cinnotto five times and intercepted three of his passes. Alan Lewis, Marcus Robinson and Tanner Morse recorded the interceptions. On the sophomore level, Sterling defeated LP 23-18 to improve to 2-1 for the season. Next Up: Its Homecoming Week for the Warriors. Sterling hosts DeKalb (2-1) Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium for the first time since 1961. DeKalb is coming off a loss to Sycamore (33-21), after wins over Ottawa (31-23) and Hampshire (37-14). |
