Football: Warriors Pull Away from Condors

The SHS Football team avoided going 0-2 for the first time since 1990 with a 21-7 win over Chicago-Curie, the defending Chicago Public League champions, Saturday at Lane Tech Stadium in Chicago. Both teams are now 1-1 for the season.

With the game tied 7-7 in the fourth quarter, Sterling put together a go-ahead six-play, 42-yard scoring drive to take the lead for good with 6:45 to play. Senior Travon Solis capped off the drive with a five-yard touchdown run. Solis had three carries for 21 yards during the drive.

Sterling added another score with less than a minute to play when senior Alan Lewis scampered in from 20 yards out on a fourth and eight play.

The Golden Warriors took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter after taking the opening kickoff and marching 59 yards in 13 plays, while eating 7:30 off the clock. Alejandro Rivera found the end zone on a fourth-and-goal play from the Curie two.

Curie took the opening kickoff of the second half and quickly drove for a touchdown to tie the game. Quarterback Reece Flemming Junior carried the ball for the final 16 yards of the drive. Flemming, who is headed to the University of Iowa next season, was later injured on a punt return and left the game.

Outside of Curie’s lone scoring drive, Sterling’s defense was solid one week after giving up over 300 yards rushing to Moline. The Condors managed just 159 yards of total offense, and ran just 37 offensive plays, compared to Sterling’s 53. Sterling controlled the ball for nearly 35 of the games 48 minutes.

Sterling ended up with 253 yards rushing, improving to 43-2 when rushing for 250 or more yards under coach Greg King.

Sterling also won 12-6 on the sophomore level, to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Next Up: Sterling plays host to LaSalle-Peru Friday (9/9) at Roscoe Eades Stadium. LP is 1-1 after losing to Alleman (33-21) and beating United Township (31-6). The sophomore game kicks off at 5:15 p.m.
