Girls Track: Warriors Send 2 Relays, Individual to State The SHS Girls’ Track and Field team will have three entries at the IHSA 2A state finals next weekend in Charleston. Heading to state are the Golden Warriors 4x100 relay team of Sarah Schneiderbauer, Payton Cater, Carly Willman and Nicole Renner; the Warriors 4x200 team of Cater, Willman, Renner and Alisa Weir; along with sophomore Lauren Zuidema in the pole vault. Competing at the 2A Sectional in Ottawa Thursday night, the Warriors 4x200 squad earned its state bid by the narrowest of margins. Renner, running Sterling’s anchor leg, just managed to just edge out the runner from Hampshire for second place, securing a spot at state. The margin was just 0.04 with a time of 1:48.51. The 4x100 squad also placed second, but with far less drama, as it surpassed the state qualifying time of 50.84 with a 50.59 effort. It came down to the wire for Zuidema in the pole vault. She missed her first two attempts at 10-0, the state qualifying mark, but made it on her third and final attempt, to secure a spot at state in the event for the second straight year. Renner and Willman, both seniors, are making return trips to state, having both advanced in the 4x100 and 4x200 last year. It is the first trip to state for Schneiderbauer, a senior, Weir, a senior, and Cater, a sophomore. In the team standings, Sterling placed seventh with 46 points. Rochelle won the team title with 69.5. Next Up: Sterling’s state-bound athletes will begin competition at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University Friday (5/20). |
