Football: Warriors Hold Off Curie, Improve to 2-0 Boxscore The SHS Football team overcame three turnovers and a fourth quarter rally from the Curie Condors to claim a 21-19 non-conference win Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadim. After leading 7-6 at halftime, Sterling scored touchdowns on its first two possesions of the second half - a 47 yard run from Corey Hartz on the third play from scrimmage, and a 25 yard pass from Alejandro Rivera to Andrew Trobaugh on a fourth down play. Sterling led 21-6 heading into the fourth quarter. Curie (0-2), coached by SHS graduate Tyson LeBlanc, scored on its next possesion to get within 21-13. Sterling had two chances to work time off the clock in fourth quarter, but fumbled both away. The second came with just over two-minutes to play, and the Condors responded with a quick touchdown drive to make it 21-19 with 24-second left. On the ensuing two-point coversion, Curie quarterback Reese Fleming scampered into the end zone to apparently tie the game, but the play was called back on a holding penalty. Trying again from the 14-yard line, Fleming's pass attempt fell incomplete. Sterling (2-0) then recovered the Condor's on-side kick attempt to preserve the win. Sterling also won on the frosh-soph level 44-12 to improve to 1-1. Next Up: The Warriors play their NIB-12 West opener at LaSalle-Peru (1-1) next Friday (9/10.) |
