Football: Warriors Rally Past Moline in Season Opener

Boxscore

Two fourth quarter touchdowns propelled the SHS Football team to a 20-10 season-opening win at Moline Friday.

After falling behind 10-7 late in the third quarter, Sterling responded with a 59-yard touchdown drive on the ensuing possession to retake the lead. Senior Brian Commiso navigated the final 24 yards into the end-zone on a perfect executed counter play.

Sterling’s defense then forced a three-and-out, giving the offense good field position inside Moline territory. Following an Alejandro Rivera quarterback keeper than took the ball to the Moline 15, Corey Hartz broke tackle-after-tackle on a game clinching touchdown scamper, his second touchdown of the game.

Hartz’ first score, a five yarder in the second quarter, put Sterling ahead 7-0.

Hartz ended up with 128 yards on 18 carries. Sterling rushed for 286 yards and did not attempt a pass in the game. Sterling is now 40-2 when rushing for 250 or more yards under coach Greg King, now in his ninth season.

Sterling lost the sophomore contest 47-12.

Next Up: Sterling hosts Chicago Curie, coached by SHS alum Tyson LeBlanc, Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium.
