Boys Swimming: Warriors Third at Conference Meet

The SHS Swimming and Diving team placed 3rd at the Varsity level and 2nd at the Junior Varsity level at this years Northern Illinois Independent Conference meet held in Byron Saturday.

Varsity Scores: 1. University Normal, 314; 2. Byron 236; 3. Sterling 190; 4. Newman Central 137; 5. Rockford Christian 134; 6. IMSA 121; 7. Morrison 104; 8. Ottawa 89.

JV Scores: 1. University Normal 238; 2. Sterling 234; 3. Rockford Christian 191; 4. IMSA 175; 5. Byron 161; 6. Newman 134; 7. Morrison 49; 8. Ottawa 20.

For the day, Sterling produced 22 best times combined for the Varsity and JV teams.

Sterling’s diving corps of Lucas Rosengren and Travis Schuneman placed 4th and 5th in the 1-meter diving competition to give Sterling 21 points moving in to the swimming portion of the meet.

Sterling opened up the meet with the 200 Medley Relay team of Chris Knutsen, Keanu Interone, Jim Fliss, and George Kelly placing 3rd with a time of 1:46.26, trimming 3 seconds off their previous best.

Michael Fassler had a season best in the 200 Free with a time of 2:01.69 good enough for 5th place and Troy Miller added a 10th place finish with a time of 2:12.12 also a season best.

Keanu Interone placed 9th in the 200 Individual Medley with a season best 2:23.47.

George Kelly and Jim Fliss added a 7th and 8th place in the 50 Freestyle. Kelly hit with a time of :24.24 and Fliss in with a time of :24.51.

Chris Knutsen put up a season best in the 100 Butterfly taking 6th with a time of 1:03.91, and Michael Schneiderbauer also put up a season best with a time of 1:06.85, good enough for 9th place.

Jim Fliss placed 5th in the 100 Freestyle with a season best :52.24.

Troy Miller also put up a season best time of 6:00.38 in the 500 Freestyle taking 8th place and Robert Clifton pitched in with a time of 6:24.11, good enough for 10 th place.

Sterling’s 200 Free Relay team of Mike Schneiderbauer, Jentry Fane, Keanu Interone, and Kyle Casten trimmed 3 seconds off their previous best, taking 4th place with a time of 1:40.35.

Chris Knutsen and Michael Fassler combined for 17 points in the 100 Backstroke. Knutsen taking 5th with a time of :59.06, and Fassler hitting with a time of 1:03.69 for 7th place.

Keanu Interone improved his seed time by taking 3rd place in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:05.56 a season best, and George Kelly placed 5th with a time of 1:06.45, a season best also for Kelly.

Sterling ended the evening with a 4 second time cut in the 400 Free Relay. Fliss, Knutsen, Fassler, and Kelly placed 3rd with a time of 3:35.39.

Next Up: The Warriors compete at the IHSA Rock Island Sectional Saturday, February 20.
