Girls Cross Country:  Warriors Take Top Honors at Twin City Meet

The SHS Girls Cross Country team has ended Rock Falls’ two-year reign as champions of the Twin Cities Meet.  The Golden Warriors took first place with 31 points, edging out Rock Falls (40) and Newman (51) in the annual meet held Tuesday at Hoover Park in Sterling.

Mary Rose Dukelow (Sr.) was the first Sterling Warrior runner (3rd overall) with a time of 21:08. Carrie McPherson (So.) was second for SHS (5th overall) at 21:16.  Carissa Apperson (Sr.) was third for Sterling (6th overall) at 21:17.  Stephanie Echebarria (Jr.) was fourth for Sterling (8th overall) at 21:53 followed by Kaylen Palmer (Jr.) at 21:55 – ninth place overall.

Sterling’s Alayna Wolfe was the first Fresh/Soph runner not on a varsity team and won the Fresh/Soph Twin City Medal for 2009.

Elilie Barton of Newman (20:15) was the first female runner to finish and won the Varsity Medal for 2009.

“Today's top performer in terms of guts and hard work goes to Mary Rose, a senior, who has put in a lot of time and miles these past few months,” said SHS Coach Nancy Gehrke. “Today she saw some of the rewards of that hard work. She had a season best time, and is only 14-seconds off her best-ever time. It was great to see her tough out the race and use guts to finish the race in front of a Rock Falls runner.

“Another Senior Warrior runner competing in her last Twin City meet with a best time of the season and getting close to her best ever time is Kairee Brown.

“Our stats reveal that our top seven runners, or even top five runners, have not been established as of yet.  This is real positive for the team, and the outlook as we head into the next several weeks of competing.”
