Football:  Warriors Knock Off Previously Unbeaten Johnsburg

The SHS Football team turned in a dominating performance on both sides of the ball and came away with a convincing 28-3 win over previously undefeated Johnsburg on Homecoming Night Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

On the defensive side, Sterling held Johnsburg – a team that had scored a combined 94 points the previous two weeks - to just four first downs, 15 yards rushing and 81 yards of total offense.  Seven of Johnsberg’s 10 possessions went for four plays or less.

Sterling held Johnsburg’s all-state wide receiver C.J. Fiedorowicz to just two receptions (he had 14 for the season entering the game) for 36 yards.  Fiedorowicz’ future college coach, Illinois’ Ron Zook, was in attendance.

Sterling’s offense limited the mistakes that had plagued it the previous two weeks and rolled up 404 yards including 325 rushing.  Sterling’s offensive line, anchored by future division-one player Tyler Loos, paved the way for running backs Corey Judd (166 yards) and Chevy Bushaw (102 yards), who both eclipsed the century mark in rushing yardage.

Judd scored all four Sterling touchdowns, three on the ground and the other on a 47-yard pass from Drew Neubauer that put the Warriors up 14-3 in the second quarter.  The TD pass came three plays after Johnsburg got on the board on a Thomas Kinney 44 yard field goal.

Judd put Sterling up 7-0 on a 22 yard run on the first play of the second quarter.  He scored his third touchdown of the second quarter on a nifty 22 yard run, tight-roping the left sideline all the way into the end zone to give the Warriors a 21-3 halftime advantage.

Sterling’s final score came after the Warrior defense held Johnsburg on downs at the SHS 27 yard line.  The Warrior offense took over and methodically marched 73 yards in 14 plays with Judd navigating the final 10 yards into the end zone.  The drive took nearly seven minutes off the clock.

The win prevented Sterling from losing three straight games for the first time since 2001 and from falling to 1-3 for the first time since 1990.

Next week Sterling gets back into NCIC-Reagan play with a big road game at Ottawa.  The Pirates (3-1, 1-0) have won three straight games after routing Dixon 33-14 Friday in Dixon.

In the sophomore game, Sterling (2-2) scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to rally past Johnsburg 27-20.  Trevon Solis scored the game winner for Sterling with just over a minute to play.
