The SHS Football team fumbled three times in the first quarter, two of which were returned for touchdowns, fell behind 28-0 and lost to state-ranked (#2 6A) Lemont 41-14 Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

Lemont’s defense, which returned six starters from last year’s 6A state runners up, held Sterling to just 76 yards of total offense.

The Golden Warriors scored on a Corey Judd two-yard run in the third quarter after Sterling recovered a fumble inside the Indian’s ten yard line.  That brought Sterling to within 28-7.

Lemont then scored again on the next play from scrimmage – a 72 yard run by all-state running back Danny Hayes, who rushed for 240 yards on 21 carries.

Sterling scored again on the ensuing kickoff, as Corey Hartz raced 92 yards for the score.  His second kickoff return for a score in as many weeks.

Sterling (1-1) will need to recover in a hurry, as unbeaten Geneseo invades Roscoe Eades Stadium next week for the NCIC-Reagan opener.  Sterling will be trying to beat Geneseo for the third straight regular season – something that has not happened since 1984.

Sterling also lost on the frosh-soph level, 20-14 as Lemont scored a touchdown with just over a minute to play to pull out the come from behind win. Trevon Solis scored both Sterling touchdowns.
