Football: Golden Warriors Lose Second Straight

STERLING – The visiting Ottawa Pirates won a share of the NCIC (Reagan) championship with a convincing 19-3 victory over Sterling. Ottawa (7-1, 4-1) will share the title with Geneseo (6-2, 4-1).

Ottawa dominated the statistical battle, out-gaining Sterling 411 to 136 in total yards, including 349 to 89 in rushing yardage. Ottawa ran 68 total plays, compared to just 30 for Sterling. The Pirates also had the ball for an amazing 32 minutes during the 48 minute contest.

After a scoreless first half, Sterling got on the scoreboard first with a 19-yard field goal by Raciel Ocampo with 5:14 left in the 3rd quarter. Ottawa responded right away on a 41-yard TD run by Brad Wignes to take a 7-3 lead.

Ottawa added two late scores – a one-yard run by Wignes and a 51-yard run by Ethan Armstrong – to round out the scoring. Wignes finished the game with 208 yards on 32 carries. Armstrong added 101 yards on 15 carries.

Sterling (5-3, 3-2) will finish the regular season at home, with the East Moline (United Township) Panthers coming to Roscoe Eades Stadium on Senior Night this Friday.
