Football Routs Clemente

It took the SHS Football team 13 seconds to take the lead on Roberto Clemente in their non-conference match-up at Roscoe Eades Stadium in Sterling on Friday (9/7.) Sterling’s Jake Hermes returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and the Golden Warriors were never threatened after that, posting a 51-21 victory over the Wildcats, who hail from the Chicago Public League.

The kickoff return was just the beginning of a big night for Hermes, as the senior rolled up 202 all-purpose yards (33 rushing, 31 receiving, 138 kickoff returns) in about a quarter and a half of playing time. In addition to his kickoff return score, Hermes scored two more times – on a 17-yard run and a 31-yard reception.

Sterling (2-1) led 35-6 after the first quarter and 51-6 at halftime.

Also scoring first half touchdowns for the Warriors:
-Niko Rivera on a nine-yard run
-Dustin Fritsch on a 14-yard pass from Rivera
-Alex Hughes on a two-yard run
-Jason Long on a one-yard run

Sterling is now 13-1 all-time against teams from the Chicago Public League.

Sterling won the frosh-soph game 40-0 to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Golden Warriors begin NCIC-Reagan play next Friday (9/14) at home against Streator.
